With the last of the snow melting and the detritus of another winter uncloaked, the evidence seemingly everywhere around town in Thompson, it is time once again naturally enough for the 2014 City of Thompson “Clean Up Project,” a long-running series of May events.
At the core of the events is the Saturday, May 24 “Clean Community Project” headquartered at Dolly Anand’s Robins Donuts franchise at Thompson Plaza, which runs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Registration is at Robin’s, with gloves, water and garbage bags provided.
The City of Thompson is paying $3 per bag again this year for trash collected, an offer that applies not just to trash picked up May 24, but for bags of trash collected in community pickup and brought to the public works yard at 120 Seal Rd. between May 12 and June 9. For more details on what trash is eligible for the $3-per-bag county, you can contact Wayne Koversky, director of public works by e-mail at koversky@thompson.ca.
The May 24 “Clean Community Project” will be preceded again this year by a “business challenge” to clean up the community a day earlier on Friday, May 23, with registration at City Hall from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Grass clippings and leaves can also be dropped off 24/7 at the compost site, opened by the City of Thompson in 2010, also at the public works yard at 120 Seal Rd., as well as e-waste at the same location from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. May 10 to Oct. 25. The e-waste program began Sept. 19, 2009 and acceptable materials are television sets, computer monitors, desktop computers, laptops, desktop printers, DVD players, VCRs, stereos, telephones, scanners, copiers, fax machines, rechargeable batteries and microwaves.
